Pennsylvania’s divorce law changed in 1980 to allow couples to file no-fault divorces. This allowed for couples to get divorced without having to prove that their spouse did something wrong.
Today, no-fault divorces are the most common way to get divorced in Pennsylvania. A divorce can be granted if both spouses sign a written consent to the divorce or after being separated for a certain amount of time. The costs for filing for divorce may vary depending on your county, but if you cannot afford to pay the fees you can ask the court to waive them.
If you are filing for divorce you may have rights to certain marital property. Marital property is generally all property that is acquired during the marriage and can include things like a house, cars, and retirement funds. You may also be entitled to some type of financial support if your spouse supported you during the marriage.
